All - curious really, I use Tiscali for my broadband, and whilst it's relatively cheap, it's also pretty slow!!

I just used www.speedtest.net to check the performance and got the following figures:

  • Iceni Way
  • 1546kb/s download
  • 381kb/s upload

Anyone else want to test their broadband performance for me and post their results? Please can you post your streetname as well, so we can get an idea of difference speeds acros Arbury Park?

Personally, I'm extremely disappointed by this, and the fact that we're on an old exchange at the Science Park, and that Virgin media (NTL as was) didn't see fit to install cable at Arbury Park.

If we were on the city centre exchange we could have access to ADSL2 with speeds up to 24Mb/s (yeah right!!). Here's the info on our exchange:

http://www.samknows.com/broadband/exchange/EASCI

Notice all the crosses, particularly under the LLU column and that we'll have to wait for 2011 for the 21st Century Network from BT!! Notice this is the exchange for the Science Park and it doesn't even have SDSL enabled!!

Now here's the city centre exchange:

http://www.samknows.com/broadband/exchange/EACAM

This is a great visual indicator of the exchange coverage:

http://www.samknows.com/broadband/mapping/mapping.php?ecode=EASCI

Just click on the little exchange icons and choose the 'show/hide exchange coverage' option...we just miss out on the city centre coverage and the Huntingdon Road coverage.

Looking forward to finding a better supplier...

- Nick

From Iceni Way with BT:

Download 3450 Kbps on average

Upload 357 Kbps on average

Durring the day (up to 5pm) and after midnight is faster.

Hi,

If we're comparing speeds across the park, it might be worth people stating the maximum up/down stream speed they'd expect, as obviously if you pay for a slower package, it would not make sense to compare it to a faster one.

I am with PlusNet (www.plus.net), which I whole heartedly recommend, as it's extremely reliable and sensibly priced. They also maintain a very robust and clean network (they will call you if certain sorts of viruses are identified as being on a machine belonging to you and connected to the internet) - I can give you more infomation on this if you're interested. Feel free to put me as a referrer (rjmayer) if you sign up! The maximum speed I should expect is 8mbps (8192kbps). I actually got 3334kbps downstream on the same www.speedtest.net just now, with 247kbps reported as the upstream speed.

As good as Plus Net (and many other ADSL companies are), Virgin Media would be my preferred option, not least because of the combined package offers available. For whatever reason, they did not install here. I would be very surprised if they themselves made that decision, as a presence here would be pretty profitable and one can draw ones own conclusions about why the developers might have provided a monopoly to BT (as you know, all ADSL companies, including Sky require a BT line to carry the connection). Anyhow, we can't do anything about that now. In my opinion, our best direction of development would be to campaign for Virgin to install, as they will in outlying villages etc if enough interest is shown. Of course, for TV, Sky is also an option, but I'm finding even that rather complicated, as I live in one of the Iceni Way houses that faces Kings Hedges Road and that facade to the park seems to be protected against alterations (including Sky dishes). I am in conference with various people about this at the moment and when I've made more progress with this, I will let you all know.

Thanks for reading.

I'm on an (up to!) 8Mb package and today's scores are 1296kbps & 296kbps - so all around pretty pathetic.

I am thinking about changing from Tiscali to see if I can get any better performance - I'm also on Iceni Way, but on the bit behind Richard and Greg...it seems reasonable that I should be getting similar speeds to them I think?

On the Virgin Media front, I absolutely agree, this really would be much the best option. My understanding is that when Arbury Park was being built NTL (as it was then) had a freeze on all capital investment so were not installing new fibre or cable anywhere in the country. As it turns out this is a huge missed opportunity for them especially with the restrictions on aerials and satellite dishes!

Since hearing that, I have recently been made aware that Virgin Media may not be on the list of statutory consultees for new developments, so it's possible they were never actually told about Arbury Park...?

Having said all that - I'd urge people to register their interest in a Virgin installation by calling them on 0845 840 7777 and asking to be put through to the 'unserviceable' line - this is apparently an internal transfer with no direct dial number. This line is for people who can't currently get Virgin services in their area (like us).

When I called the 0845 number, the guy repeated the party line for the last two years...they are not generally cabling any new areas but instead are concentrating on investment in improving current services. Don't be put off by this...be persistent and ask to be put through to the 'unserviceable' line to register your interest in additional services being provided.

Let's see if we can combine to make a difference!!

Hello everyone!

We have Virgin ADSL and our speed is 1962up and 377download...pretty sad. We used to have cable in our old property and I miss it...I will definitely call them to insist.

See you around!

Virgin Broadband, 8Meg package. I live on Chieftain Way (houses near the Banana).

1970 kb/s up, 377 kb/s down. Wireless connection to the computer.

I did this a while ago when I was investigating why I had pitiful speed (I'll see if I can dig out my results later). It turned out that the phone socket upstairs was really poor for ADSL. I'd recommend plugging your modem into the BT master socket (presumably in the main living room). I found that this really helped for both wired and wireless connections.

It's quite annoying that the cable companies didn't decent install cables when the ground was open when the houses were being built!

I'll try and ring the Virgin Cable line to register my annoyance!

Hi all...X

I mentioned in another thread that our Broadband via BT was around 131kbps/41kbps!!! BT in their wisdom intially announced that the Science Park exchange only offers a 2MB maximum facility. I was going to call their sales department next as we are paying for an 8MB service!? However, I was passed to a 3rd party outfit and BT said that if the fault was determined to be at our end then we would be charged £25 minimum. The excellent 3rd party ran checks and insisted it was BTs line that was at fault.  5 days later and I can report currently the following:

Broadband Link
Connection Speed:

Certainly of the quality required for my needs. Therefore it is possible to have better service than most are reporting....and BT appear to have been saved from my call...and I save an expense of £25.....which doesn't compensate me for my time spent resolving their problem as it weren't anything to do with my life in the first place....poo!

Sooty - that's certainly very interesting...I presume you're paying BT directly for your broadband, you're not with a Tiscali or Virgin or Orange or anyone else?

Do you know who the 3rd party company were? Or how they tested/fixed the line? Do you have a contact number for them?

I'm prtty convinced that there are line issues with a number of houses at the west end of the Park...everyone should be getting the sorts of speeds you are now getting...

Thanks, Nick

The other day, I got home from work to find a flyer from Virgin on my door mat, advertising their Cable services. Incensed by this 'carrot' being brandished in front of me, and knowing they'd not be able to actually offer the service they'd plugged but rather offer a 'poor brother' ADSL solution instead, I called them.

Having put in a request to be signed up, their database quickly told them I could not have the cable service, as expected. Knowing there must be a department that deals with new area installations, I eventually I got through to someone who could help and they gave me the following number. When you call the Virgin Spot Out Team on 0121 6837638, you leave your brief details, including Name and Address on an answerphone and supposedly an engineer will investigate the viability of providing a service to you.

It's anyone's guess whether this is answerphone monitored or not, but I would encourage as many people on the park as possible to leave their details, as then perhaps, just perhaps they might come and install for us.

All the best,

Richard

Sooty - I'm going to complain to Tiscali about my broadband performance...how did you go about it with BT, and how did you get to the 3rd party company? Do you know what their role was and what they did to investigate your concerns?

Thanks, Nick

Hi Nick...X Sorry for the delay in answering....i've been busy and my emails have backed up!x

I am direct to BT business broadband. They initially investigated my lines performance and discovered it was pi** poor. They then said they will hand me to a 3rd party technical outfit that operates WITHIN BT...but...if it was discovered that the fault was my end then i would be charged for it. After I was handed to them then things went superbly! They discovered that there was a defficiency in supply via the Science Park exchange. They had engineers go the exchange and sort it. Since then I have had super performance and todays is supplied:

MY CURRENT IP: ****.179.174 - (BRITISH TELECOMMUNICATIONS)
Date IP Address Download Upload Latency Server Distance Share
11/1/2008 8:31 AM GMT ****.179.174 3390 kb/s 378 kb/s 43 ms Maidenhead ~ 50 mi Close

It cost me nothing and took 2 days to sort. My understanding is that any connection going through the Science Park needs tweaking. If BT are the supplier to your supplier then they can and must act. I hope that helps...X
