Hello,

Just a quick question as to who everyone has as their ISP and the speeds they get?

I'm with Virgin Media (On Chieftain Way) on their "upto 8mb" service and get about 1.5 - 2.5mbps for our house.

We experience severe slowdown alot (such as now where it's only .25mbps.

Who does everyone else use? We're considering switching to BT as they already provide our line rental.

Cheers!

Rich

Rich - there are a couple of other threads on broadband speed issues:

I'm still not happy with my speeds - someone at work mentioned that they switched from Tiscali (my current ISP) to O2 and jumped from under 1Mbps to 6Mbps...no physical changes to their line whatsoever, just a change of ISP!! And he saved money!!!

I'd be interested to know if there is anyone on O2 broadband at Orchard Park and what speeds O2 are delivering...?

Hi there, we are on BT's Broadband and we get consistently 4.4 meg, sometimes creeping higher to around the 5 meg mark, and slowing down at peak times to around the 2.5 meg mark

Ergh, I forgot to search for this topic and it's even visible on the thread page. Sorry!
We're considering switching to BT's package as we're having issues with Virgin. Especially with their speed coverage.

Just to let you know, I'm on BT and over the past couple of weeks have had losses in connection or the speed dropping down to 0.25Mbps, until then things had been pretty stable at 2.5Mbps.

Last week there was a general slowdown of areas of the internet due to some mis-configured routers causing some instability in routing traffic. My speeds seem to be back up to 2.5Mbps again now and connection hasn't dropped since Friday, so whether the slowdown that I was seeing was related, who knows! When I called BT about it they claimed there were no issues at their end and perhaps it was just increased traffic between me and the exchange.

Reech - let us know how you get on...as far as I'm aware, when you switch ISPs, it's usually only a billing change, especially for an exchange like ours where there is no non-BT ISP hardware installed. You are currently billed by Virgin Media, but I'm fairly sure we're all running on the BT kit.

What seems to be interesting is that our exchange allegedly has new and old kit in it...if your phone line is connected to the old kit, the broadband rates are lower - this is why two houses next door to each other might end up with drastically different broadband speeds. I'm not quite sure where I heard this rumour...

Sooty's experience was that with the better level of service he gets from BT Business Broadband, they were able to sort something at the exchange to improve his throughput - perhaps they moved his line connection to the newer kit...

It would be really useful to get some hard evidence of all of this...I have asked OPAG to investigate it but it's fairly low on their priority list.

BTW - what are you useing to test the throughput speeds - I'm using www.speedtest.net...

I just wish we had fibre optic here. What a pain in the bum this all is.
