I've been living on Graham Road for about 8 months now, and I have been continually expecting them to plant trees along the side of the street.  There are squares filled with tarmac that seem like they are destined to host trees... but.. still Nothing!  Any idea when/if they're ever going to get around to filling them in with trees?  It would be a drastic improvement over the current broken tarmac and dirty pavement.

Anyone else wishing for a little more urban greenery?

In a recent meeting with Gallagher Estates, I was told that some tree pits would be planted this year where the paths can be finished...

The problem seems to be that Gallagher are responsible for the finish until the paths and roads are adopted by the County Council and would be forced to resurface whole paths even if there was minor damage to one small section as the County Councail appparently won't adopt a 'patched' surface.

I understand that the County Council won't adopt part of a development...it's all or nothing.

So the paradox appears to be that the paths won't be finished until they can be quickly adopted by the County Council, and the Council won't adopt anything until it's all ready. Given the cessation of building...this could possibly be some years?

I will endeavour to flesh out my understanding and report back. It would seem VERY sensible for Gallagher and the County to agree to finish and adopt sections of Arbury Park as they are completed and inhabited...

Especially as there are already purpose-planted trees in places like behind the (still unihabited) houses on Starr End and Flack End.

So has building of new units actually stopped? Hey, maybe that means the pasture across the street from me on Graham Road will actually stay open for the forseeable future! That would be lovely, although I still miss the trees.

Lu3ke - the land across the other side of Graham Road belongs to Cambridge City Council who are currently in the process of trying to sell it to a builder. It had outline planning permission for about 30 homes, but I believe that has now expired as it's over 3 years old.

It will eventually be built on as the land investment is too expensive to be left vacant, but with the slump in private housing, it could easily be 2-3 years (or more!) I guess.

In the meantime, like all the other undeveloped plots, it would be nice if they kept it tidy and didn't let it get so overgrown...

Thanks, Nick

Actually, I very much prefer it all overgrown and wild (Well, as "wild" as a one acre patch of ex-agricultural land in the middle of a suburban setting can be, anyway.)  As long as it doesn't fill with litter, and nobody starts fly-tipping there, I think it is wonderful all grassy and covered with wildflowers, etc.

I noticed a yellow notice tapes to a lamp-post, dated late July, that suggests that they are looking for planning permission for 48 homes.  I assume that that is for either the open land on the corner of Graham/Topper, or across Topper street a little bit to the East, where there is another open patch.

I'm hoping that you're right an that we'll have another couple of years of no building, though.  Even economic clouds have a silver lining!

So... over the past few days they have been opening up the tarmac'd over tree boxes on Graham Road, as well as building some new ones on Topper Street... This is great!... However... I'm not a gardener or anything, but it seems to me that the middle of December probably isn't the best time to plant new trees?

Am I wrong about that?

Luke - I'm no gardener either, but I think I read somewhere in the agreement about what works will be done on site that the official "planting season" starts in November until early in the new year...

Googling this seems to suggest that the best time of year is when the trees are "dormant", so that would be between autumn and spring...

FYI. There were people out doing things to the tree pits along Ring Fort Road this morning, so I asked when they were planning to put trees in them. They said 5th January.
